VOLUNTEERS
Putting on a relay the size and with the logistical challenges of the River to River Relay requires hundreds of volunteers to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our participants. Starting in 2024 we will be adopting a “Team Provided” volunteer model to supplement our long standing pool of dedicated volunteers that serve runners out on course.

LOCAL TEAM VOLUNTEERS REQUIREMENT

Teams with at least one member residing within a 100 mile radius of any point of the course is considered a local team and must provide one volunteer. Non-Local teams with all members residing outside of a 100 mile radius of the course are exempt from this requirement.

Use our zip codes page to see if your team qualifies as a local team.

FULFILLING THE REQUIREMENT

Option 1: Recruit a volunteer to work on behalf of your team. Team managers must submit the name and info for their volunteer by the preliminary roster deadline and the volunteers assignment will be made by the volunteer coordinator.

Option 2: Pay the volunteer surcharge of $50. The surcharge can be paid upfront with your entry fee but must be paid no later than the preliminary roster deadline. We will use your volunteer surcharge to help recruit community groups to volunteer at the Relay.

TEAM STATUS/VOLUNTEER SUBMISSION

Team managers should use the volunteer form to declare their teams status, provide volunteer information , pay the surcharge, or provide their exempt status by the preliminary roster deadline of March 16th. Teams who do not complete volunteer status submission will be assessed the volunteer surcharge. Teams providing inaccurate information will be assessed the volunteer surcharge and administrative fines.

NO SHOW

It’s the team managers responsibility to ensure that the volunteer they provided shows up on time for their assignment. If a teams volunteer no shows the team will be assessed the volunteer surcharge post relay along with administrative fines. Any team or runners from a team with outstanding fees shall not be eligible to participate in the following years relay.

VOLUNTEER ELIGIBILITY

The following are prerequisites for volunteers:
• Must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

• Provide their own transportation to and from assigned location.
• Be willing to fulfill their entire shift at an assigned location.
• Be physically able to perform their assigned duties
• Provide their own food and drink during shift.

STAFF AN EXCHANGE ZONE

As in years past if your team provides a team of 4 or more volunteers to staff an exchange zone, your team will be guaranteed an entry into the next years relay as well as satisfying your team provided volunteer requirement.
